2015 Field Hockey – Division I

Defensive Player of the Year: Sarah Sprink, Maryland

Sprink, the Big Ten Player of the Year, helped Maryland to the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, posting the eight-best scoring defense in the nation while facing a top-15 schedule.

Offensive Player of the Year: Paula Heuser, Albany

Heuser ranked third in the nation in scoring, picking up America East Offensive Player of the Year honors and an America East tournament title along the way. Despite facing a top-15 schedule, Heuser ranked second in the nation with 34 goals and 79 points.

Rookie of the Year: Roos Weers, Syracuse

Weers helped the Orange to the national title, earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors as Syracuse won the ACC regular-season title. With her in the backfield, Syracuse allowed less than a goal per game and ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense while facing the nation’s third-toughest schedule.

Coach of the Year: Josette Babineau, Maine

Babineau mentored the Black Bears to an impressive turnaround in 2015, taking a 10-10 team from 2014 to 19-4 in 2015, almost doubling the wins from the previous year. Maine finished the season in the top-20 and advanced to the America East title game, notching two top-10 wins on the season.

Defensive Player of the Year: Taylor Parker, Millersville

Parker helped the Marauders average less than half-a-goal a game in 2015, including a stretch of eight straight shutouts. The Marauders advanced to the PSAC championship game and the NCAA semifinals; Millersville allowed opponents to score twice in only two games.

Offensive Player of the Year: Erika Kelly, Stonehill

Kelly led the nation in scoring; she was the only player in the nation to average more than 3 points a game despite the Skyhawks’ facing the second-toughest schedule in the nation. Stonehill won the NE-10 title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals, earning the top seed in the north region.

Rookie of the Year: Mary McNeil, Merrimack

McNeil helped the Warriors advance to the NCAA title game in her rookie year, leading the team in scoring (14-11-39) and ranking ninth nationally in scoring despite facing the nation’s sixth-toughest schedule. The NE-10 Rookie of the Year led the nation’s freshmen in scoring.

Coach of the Year: Sandy Miller, East Stroudsburg

Miller led the Warriors to the national championship, picking up the PSAC title along the way. One year after reaching the PSAC semifinal and going 11-9, East Stroudsburg went 17-3 while navigating the nation’s toughest schedule.

Defensive Player of the Year: Lexi Smith, TCNJ

Smith, the NJAC Defensive Player of the Year, helped the Lions return to the NCAA final weekend and a 20-win season, posting the nation’s sixth-ranked scoring defense while facing the nation’s third-toughest schedule.

Offensive Player of the Year: Rachel Kennedy, Bowdoin

Kennedy, the NESCAC Player of the Year, led Bowdoin to the NESCAC title and the top seed in the NCAA tournament and a 21-1 record while ranking second in the nation in scoring. The Polar Bears faced the toughest schedule in the nation and advanced to the title game.

Rookie of the Year: Grace Jennings, Middlebury

Jennings helped the Panthers win the NCAA title, scoring the game-winning goal in the title game. The NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Jennings helped Middlebury to a 20-win season while navigating the nation’s second-toughest schedule.

Coach of the Year: Sally Scatton, William Smith

Scatton led the Herons to a regional final berth and a top-seven final ranking, one year after ending the season in the Liberty League final. William Smith ranked in the top-10 in scoring and posted a seven-game improvement from 2014.
